Bay Street Shed and Carper Road Junction is the editor’s layout which regularly attends model railway shows around the country. Work started in January 2007 and it made its public debut in part built condition at the Tring and District Model Railway Show just 10 months later in October 2007.
The layout is formed of two halves joined by a pair of curved fiddle yard boards. Its purpose is three fold: firstly it is a test track for new review samples, secondly it is a home layout designed, initially, to fit within in a 13ft x 10ft bedroom and thirdly it is the exhibition layout for Hornby Magazine.
Today the layout has its own 16ft x 8ft shed which will allow expansion of the locomotive shed to incorporate a turntable and a larger shed building.
Conventional DC control is used throughout for the layout, rather than Digital Command Control (DCC) as electrics are one of the joys of modelling for the builder.
Bay Street Shed has been the main focus of attention. This 6ft long scenic area captures part of a locomotive shed with a double track main line running across the front. The locomotive shed is of the Northlight design, built from an extended Scalescenes.com download kit and there is also a coaling stage at the opposite end using Hornby’s Skaledale buildings. The shed is capable of holding 10 locomotives.
As a layout, Bay Street isn’t set on any particular region or time period, although it is always operated with BR steam era, and early diesel, stock to recreate the halcyon days of steam at work. At exhibitions stock is rotated daily – one day Southern Region, another Midland and sometimes Eastern or Western Region.
The opposite side, Carper Road Junction, forms a second 6ft long scenic area and is currently under development. This section has allowed a long held ambition to model a four track main line, although only two controllers are required to keep trains moving. So far Carper Road Junction hasn’t been shown in public – it stands at the rear of the layout usually as part of the fiddle yard area.
However, on July 26/27 Carper Road Junction will make its debut with scenery at the Hartlepool Model Railway Show when the entire layout will be displayed in double sided format.
Further updates on Bay Street Shed and Carper Road Junction will be posted here in the future.
